Reasoning and Inferencing Mechanics

Video Briefing: Reasoning and Inferencing Mechanics

Module Overview: Reasoning and Inferencing Mechanics

The core computational power of semantic technologies lies in automated reasoning—the ability of algorithmic inference engines to uncover implicit facts, deduce missing relationships, and verify logical consistency across millions of graph assertions. This module demystifies the algorithmic mechanics powering modern Description Logic (DL) reasoners (such as HermiT, Pellet, and Openllet) and rule-based inference engines.

You will explore how tableau algorithms perform consistency checking and classification, learning how to interpret unsatisfiable class reports and pinpoint conflicting axioms. Furthermore, you will investigate hybrid reasoning strategies that combine DL classification with forward-chaining and backward-chaining rule systems (such as SWRL, Jena Rules, and Datalog), enabling high-throughput operational business logic.

Learning Objectives

By completing the topics in this module, you will be prepared to:

  • Master Description Logic Reasoning: Understand tableau-based consistency checking, concept satisfiability, and automated class subsumption.
  • Diagnose Logical Contradictions: Interpret reasoner conflict traces to rapidly isolate unsatisfiable classes and contradictory disjointness axioms.
  • Implement Custom Rule-Based Inferencing: Author forward-chaining rules in SWRL and Datalog to calculate business metrics and relationship closures.
