  • What is the best way to learn data science?

What is the best way to learn data science?

    Learning about data science

With the increasing popularity of data science, there are now countless online tutorials on machine learningdata science and statisticsPython and R. Most of these tutorials follow the same pattern: learn some basic commands, go through a simple use case, apply some algorithms and discuss the results, which raises the question “what is the best way to learn about data science”?

The first thing we would have to ask would, what does the job of data scientist look like on a daily basis?

A data scientist will have to do (amongst other things):

    • Discuss the business problem with the stakeholders and convert it into a data science problem.
    • Understand the different metrics and how they relate to business outcomes.
    • Understand the algorithms, and how the various trade-offs in terms of explanatory power/predictive power/implementation.
    • Present and communicate results.

So, data science is a lot more than just loading data and playing around with algorithms in scikit-learn and R. It is easy to become very good in one of those skills, while missing the rest.

Many others resort to competitions, and that is a fine way to learn how to use the tools properly, but you are not going to face the same challenges you face in real life. Competitions is a great way to learn how to code pipelines and experiment with different algorithms. However, in a machine learning competition, the metric of the problem is given to you. You won’t have to present outcomes. You can create a solution of arbitrary complexity, as long as it drives you up the leaderboard, leading to monster ensembles of many models mixed together.

Learn data science the right way

This is why in Beyond Machine we took a different turn in teaching data science. Not only we are teaching the most popular tools (R, Python and Weka), and the basic principles behind machine learning and statistics, but we also work with you on 3 different projects which help you build up a portfolio and apply for jobs.

For example, on one project we teach you how to get a dataset and transform it so that you can answer a particular problem, while at the same time taking into account the uncertainty and data issues associated with a problem. I another lecture we teach about some of the issues you might meet when presenting sensitive results to a non-technical audience.

Also, the course is not just for people who want to become data scientists. While R and Python and the most popular choices of languages for data scientists, Weka is an amazing tool that can be used to do machine learning through a graphical user interface. You don’t have to know how to code to analyse data. Clearly very useful for people outside of tech who want to use data science, without having to go deep into it.

  • How mentoring can help you land a job in data science

How mentoring can help you land a job in data science

Getting a job in data science

Let me ask you a question, what do the following categories of people have in common:

    1. University students
    2. STEM graduates
    3. Humanities graduates
    4. Professionals over the age of 30
    5. Moms returning to work

Many of these people want to become data scientists! And this comes at no surprise.

Data science is still one of the most lucrative careers out there. Data science salaries can easily go up to 6 figures and they include lots of benefits like flexible working hours and other perks, like a very interesting working environment, a great job market, and the opportunity to work in a very mentally stimulating field.

Getting a job in data science in very difficult if you know which steps to take. The problem is that most people follow the same steps, without a clear plan.

Mistakes people make when trying to become data scientists

Let me guess, if you are reading this article you probably have taken some steps towards learning data science. The things that people usually do are:

    1. Join 1-2 courses on Coursera
    2. Maybe do a course on Udemy
    3. Maybe follow a free tutorial or two on Python

These steps are great, and they are a very good start.

But alone, they are not enough. How I know this? Well, I’ve been contacted by 10s of students over the last 12 months, alone, asking me how they can get a job in data science. And all of these students took the exact same steps that I outlined above. So, let’s see what is wrong.

Problem 1: Data science is a vast field

Data science is not a single field. It is actually a term that was created to blend different fields together. The following depicts the different disciplines that go into data science.

As you can see the term “data science” encapsulates many many different disciplines, from AI to statistics to data mining. This is one of the reasons curricula in data science can be so much all over the place. Some curricula focus on things like deep learning. Others focus on things like teaching you specific tools, like scikit-learn. For someone starting out, this can be utterly confusing. Even more important, it is not clear what you should focus on in order to get a job in the field!

Problem 2: Understanding data science in depth requires years of study in topics like probability theory, optimisation, and information theory.

Fully understanding a field in depth takes many years of study. There is this famous saying that it takes 10,000 study hours, before you can call yourself an expert in a field. Obviously, getting a job in data science, might not require you to reach the level of a super expert. But you still need to have a good enough understanding of the field, to the extent that you can be comfortable working in it. Also, you need to have a good enough understanding of the field, so that you know what to focus on as you progress in your career.

Unfortunately, just joining a few random courses, doesn’t help you with this aspect. You will miss the forest for the trees, and end up knowing only about a few specific techniques, with no proper understanding of how everything ties together.

Problem 3: Getting a job in data science, requires you to show that you can actually add value to a company

Knowing about data science is only half the battle. What is most important is to know how to add value to a company. And this is something that is not always easy to do. Maybe you have a PhD, but this does not help you land the job you want in an industry (e.g. finance), because people are not convinced that you understand the industry. This gets to the next point about how the job market works.

    How the job market works

The job market works a bit like a video game. People know initially know nothing about you. So, when they are looking to hire someone they are looking for “signals” as proxies of the attributes they are looking for. It impossible to fully know someone until you’ve worked with them for a long time. So, all these attributes are signals that work like points in an employer’s head

    1. Type of degree someone has studied.
    2. Prestige of a university
    3. Work experience
    4. Relevant project work
    5. Specific skills needed in a role (e.g. experience with certain technologies or programming languages)
    6. Presentation during an interview
    7. Performance during an interview

Some employers might also add some other criteria or might ignore some of the criteria above. But in general, most employers will think in a way like:

    1. PhD: +2 points
    2. No experience: -1 points
    3. Good knowledge of Python: 1 point

I am not saying that people are actually counting those points in their heads, but this is how they are thinking about the problem, at least on a subconscious level.

Data science and machine learning are becoming more and more popular

How does this relate to you trying to get a job in data science

There are quite a few challenges that you’re faced when you are trying to convert to data science:

    1. Everyone has done online courses, so these alone are not going to give you enough credibility
    2. If you want to do a university degree, then you end up with a huge bill. Plus these degrees take 1-2 years to finish.
    3. Taking a bootcamp will not necessarily convince employers that you actually understand how you can help them out.

However, if I want to get a new job or a project in the space in data science, it is probably going to take me only a few weeks. Why? Well, there are a few reasons for that:

    1. I have a vast network.
    2. I have a ton of credibility through my academic achievements.
    3. I have lots of work experience.
    4. I have lots of things to show in my portfolio, including books I’ve written.

But, obviously, it took me more than 10 years to cultivate this. The question is, how can you work towards that level, without having to spend all these years and at a fraction of the effort?

That is, how can you make sure that:

    1. You learn data science as fast as possible
    2. Land easily jobs in data science.
    3. You know how to make employers understand the value you bring to their company…
    4. …and actually deliver this value!

Photo from an old class I held on data science

    The solution? Mentoring!

This is where mentoring makes a huge difference.

You know why employers value experience so much? Because experience matters.

Think about your personal or professional life. I am sure that if you could go back, there are many things you would differently if you had the possibility, correct? This is what comes with experience.

Experience gives you the ability to see a plan, where others see chaos.

Right now, you are probably taking various steps trying to learn about the various methods and techniques in data science. Then, you might start applying to jobs to get a feel for the market. And then, you hope you will get a job. But you know that you are not confident enough for those interview, and probably this shows in the results you’re getting. So, you feel a bit lost. Should you just take more Coursera courses? Maybe you should just try to learn more tools? What is the solution?

This is where a mentor comes into play.

    A mentor can help you:

    1. Understand the vast field of data science.
    2.  Create a personalised learning plan for you.
    3. Prepare you for those job interviews.

Think about all great athletes. Behind every great athlete there is always a great coach. Would Michael Jordan become who he is without Phil Jackson?  He would still be one of the greatest, but maybe not as we came to know him.

Data science is no different. That’s why I like to offer a really personalised mentoring service for my programs. The challenge is that I can only do that for a limited number of people at a time. I wish I could do it for everyone, but in between all my projects, I just have limited capacity. So, I have to keep the circle of my mentees small, so I can ensure the quality of the mentoring remains high and the service is personalised.

  • Why Bother With Statistics: Three Key Reasons To Understand

Why Bother With Statistics: Three Key Reasons To Understand

There is a vast sea of data being produced every minute in the modern world. This data needs to be analysed to make important decisions and predictions.

Statistics is an area of study in which mathematical training is required in order to deal with the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. It uses a combination of tools that allows you to gain crucial insights from data and avoid the common mistakes that lead to erroneous conclusions. It also provides information about the world around us in order to make decisions on the future. It is important for understanding how to make predictions about future events based on past data.

The data collected can also help understand patterns and trends that may not be obvious when looking at the raw data alone. Statistics help us to make sense of all of this data by providing information about things like how much variation we see between different groups of people or how likely something is to happen again in future based on what has happened before.

There are many different fields in which statistics play a vital role. These include business, education, psychology, and medicine among others. Statistics also play an important role in the sciences such as physics and chemistry.

    So, why is Statistics Important?

Here are three critical reasons that will highlight the importance of statistics in the modern age:

    1) Draw Valid Conclusions With the Help of Statistics:

Statistics allows you to produce accurate results for various datasets. Statisticians use various tools to draw reasonable conclusions from the collected data. It also plays a major role in collecting data and its implications for any research.

    2) Avoid Common Pitfalls During Data Analysis:

With the help of statistics, decision-makers can avoid common pitfalls like overconfidence bias in the data analysis and decision-making process. Confirmation bias can also be removed with the help of reliable conclusions drawn by the statistical tools.

    3) Make Decisions More Confidently:

Most decisions in different business situations demand that action be taken immediately. By using statistical analysis, you can make decisions more confidently without the risk of bias creeping into the process.

    Statistical Analysis Methods

Statistical analysis is a technique for drawing conclusions from data. Statistical analysis methods can be applied in a wide range of fields by scientists to analyse the evidence for their hypothesis, in order to help businesses, make predictions and decisions about their products and services.

You can read more about some of the widely used statistical analysis methods here.

  • Best languages for machine learning and data analytics?

Best languages for machine learning and data analytics?

    By Yasmin Chamchoun

Best languages for machine learning and data analytics

Machine Learning Language can be defined as an application of machine learning for developing predictive models and algorithms that automate reasoning tasks with language data. Machine learning languages are difficult to learn and at times, frustrating. But they are revolutionizing the way we create applications and algorithms by using advanced techniques like deep learning.

Programming languages such as Python, R, and JavaScript are often used in ML language and they provide many libraries, tools and frameworks for implementing machine-learning methods in text analytics.

    Python

Python is a popular programming language for beginners. This is because it’s easy to learn and has an intuitive syntax that makes it easy to read. It’s also one of the most-used languages in Data Science, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. It can be used to automate repetitive tasks, like scraping web pages or reformatting data.

Python has many features that make it an attractive programming language, but here are five reasons why it’s so popular:

    • ·       Python comes with a comprehensive standard library
    • ·       There are many tools to help you debug, test your code and generate reports
    • ·       Python has powerful data structures
    • ·       It’s compatible with just about everything
    • ·       It’s very readable

The top 5 Machine Learning libraries in python that are widely used by ML experts are: Numpy, Pandas, Matplotlib, SciKit-Learn and NLTK.

    R

R is a another popular programming language and software environment for statistical computing, data mining, data analysis, graphics representation, and so on. The R language is an open source project with an active community of contributors from around the world.

The development of the R language was started by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman at the University of Auckland in 1995.

    Julia

Julia is a relatively new programming language created in 2008 by MIT professor Dr. Alan Edelman.

It is considered is a dynamic and interactive programming language that offers programmers the performance of compiled languages with the ease-of-use of a scripting language. Its LLVM-based runtime makes it unique in this respect. Julia combines the power and versatility of programming languages like Python, R, Matlab, or Ruby with the speed and efficiency of a natively compiled language such as C or C++.

In this way, Julia is able to provide the benefits of both worlds: speed without giving up convenience. It also provides first-class integration with other languages such as C/C++ via its foreign function interface, meaning that users can call routines written in other languages without knowing any details about those other languages.

    Java

Java is a programming language mainly used for enterprise software that was developed at Sun Microsystems in the early 1990s. It was originally designed for interactive television, but it has since become used in many other applications. It’s considered one of the simplest languages to learn, even if you have no prior coding experience. It follows the objected-oriented programming paradigm.

Java is used sometimes for machine learning deployment, but these days it is rarely the first language of choice. It’s great for enterprise software, but languages like Python or Scala are usually preferred for data science and machine learning projects.

    Scala

Scala is a  strong statically typed general-purpose programming language which supports both object-oriented programming and functional programming on the Java Virtual Machine. Scala combines object-oriented and functional programming. Scala is designed to interoperate smoothly with Java code, and fully supports running on the JVM.

It can be used as a scripting language for applications that need a program which executes faster than Java but does not require compilation.

Scala has been successfully applied in domains as diverse as video games, mathematical modelling, machine learning, concurrency testing, image processing, business intelligence systems and web applications. It is used for machine learning deployments, some times, but it is not nearly as popular as Python.

    JavaScript

JavaScript is also one of the most popular programming languages for starting out and is mostly used in frontend. It has become more prevalent than ever with the emergence of new technologies like Node.js. It was developed by Netscape in 1995 to facilitate web development. JavaScript can be applied to both client-side and server-side scripting where it can be used to create interactive websites, web applications, and also mobile apps.

The popularity of JavaScript is because it’s easy to learn and it’s compatible with many different programming languages which makes it easy for developers to use when they are working on different projects. It is possible to do machine learning on javascript using libraries like Tensorflow.js.

So, which of these languages has the brightest outlook?

A recent Linkedin poll by expert data scientist Dr. Stylianos Kampakis revealed some interesting results. Nearly 80% of voters believed Python was the way forward. Those who voted ‘Other’ mentioned programming languages such as ‘Julia’ and ‘Rust’ as the ones with the brighter future. You can see the poll results below as well as check them out here.

  • Should I Study Data Science or Data Analysis?

Should I Study Data Science or Data Analysis?

Do you intend to make a career in data science or data analysis but are worried about the right one for you? Are you a graduate interested in exploring the data field as part of your college degree but unsure which pathway to achieve your career success?

If you’re a professional looking forward to diversifying your experience and speciality, data science and data analysis can be your best fit.   Whether or not you have gained a degree in data-related fields, data science and data analysis have lucrative opportunities you can seize now.

However, you need to choose the right pathway that matches your professional and personal interests. In this article, I will guide you step-by-step with key details about data science and data analysis and their details. With my over 10 years of experience in data science, I’ll show you the differences between data science and data analysis, helping you to choose the option best for you.

What are Data Science and Data Analysis?

Data Science in its simplest definition is a multifaceted approach to gaining useful insights from voluminous amounts of data generated from business, productions, marketing, sales, and other daily human activities.

Instead of allowing them to waste, businesses have devised various approaches to maximize data and extracting actionable insights from them through data processing, analysis and visualization by data scientists and analysts. Data science includes the stepwise preparation of raw facts for analysis, processing, and visualization of the obtained results. The presentable insights generated through data analysis are usually reviewed and further applied by other stakeholders in data science.

Data preparation is an essential stage in data processing which is a key terminology in data science. It encompasses data cleansing, aggregating, and manipulation using methodological processes and tools which the data scientists must have mastered.

Such tools range from simple software such as Microsoft Office Packages to intermediate Python, Java, C++, etc. programming languages and upcoming intelligent data science facilities capable of processing billions of data quickly and accurately. Those sophisticated technologies have embedded capabilities to transform meaningless data into gainful information through human and AI-assisted predictions.

The outcomes of such analysis, predictions, and data visualization help businesses to make profitable decisions and avoid business catastrophes. For each of these developed models and algorithms, an indisputable test and follow up experiment must be conducted to validate its accuracy. Therefore, most data science requires a background in computer science, mathematics, and statistics to successfully interpret numerical and quantitative results and understand analytical patterns in data science.

Like data science, data analysis is the scientific and entrepreneurial practice of analyzing raw data by automated mechanical processes and algorithms. Data analysis is a subfield of data science popular among businesses who want to analyze and study their business data for the sake of understanding their customer, learning about competitors, and generating more sales that translate to bigger returns.

Unlike data science, data analysis techniques focus on revealing trends and metrics which businesses can seize and learn from. Data analysts are best at cleaning, polishing, transforming, and visualizing processed data into clearly recognizable segments that business directors and team members can quickly comprehend.

The practical information obtained from data analysis can then be optimized to increase overall productivity. In today’s organizations, data scientists and data analysts are increasingly making better use of unstructured, structured, and semi-structured gigabytes of data for humankind’s benefit whether in scientific research, technology, eCommerce, banking, agriculture, entertainment, or governance.

In most companies, data scientists and data analysts collaborate to execute projects. Hence, most times, their roles may intersect.

What are the differences between data science and data analysis?

Most differences between data science and data analysis can best be understood by learning more about the functions of each of these professionals in companies. The differences between a data analyst and a data scientist are technically unrelated in terms of professional duties and scope of knowledge and variety of experiences. So, data scientists play more technical roles while data analysts are groomed to have a knack for business and succeed in understanding entrepreneurial and financial insights.

This is why most e-commerce, marketing and financial brands would rather employ a data analyst instead of a data scientist. However, data scientists are mostly focused on scientific research and inquiries that lead to unravelling hidden insights. They develop new means and optimum approaches to maximizing data, exploring depths that data analysts don’t.

For instance, data scientists must be acquainted with extensive knowledge in coding languages such as Python, C++, Java, Perl, etc. while data analysts learn Python and R to succeed in any data analysis role. Data analysis requires only essential principles or no prior experience of programming compared to having in-depth knowledge of programming tools as a data scientist.

Data scientists work with machine learning algorithms, enabling them to easily generate insights whereas data analysis doesn’t incorporate machine learning to make data-driven decisions. This limits the scope of data analysis, from micro to mini scale projects, often involving one or a few professionals in each business or department.

Data scientists are often tasked with exploring alternative channels and innovative methodologies as well as creating processes and systems from scratch, unlike data analysts. While data analysis polish existing structured data, data science heavily deals with unstructured data. Hence, statistical skills are of less importance in data analysis compared to data science

In the industry, data analysts are assigned to support business leaders who work together to move a department forward using data. The capability of these analysts to make informed decisions and apply useful trends in business decision-making makes data scientists extremely helpful in companies.

Can I learn data science and data analysis without a degree?
