There is a growing potential and use of AI in the construction industry in real life use cases like designing, planning, and logistics. AI in construction is being used to rethink construction operations in radically new ways.
AI in construction leads to time saving, safety and efficiency. Komatsu have implemented NVidia’s AI platform and OPTiM IoT management software in its machinery. The Nvidia AI will be used to drive drones and robots thereby improving safety and efficiency. The OPTiM platform will be used to identify workers and machinery. This system will be used to create a 3D image of the site. Komatsu is calling this initiative the Smart Construction solutions service. This service will generate 3D maps of the site, retrace blueprints and come up with construction plans in a day or two. Layton Construction is Using Nvidia and Autodesk AI platforms in a bid to enhance Layton’s site safety. The management team stated that they experienced an 18% increase in safety. The project with Layton dubbed BIM 360 also enabled architects, engineers, contractors and other actors to actively update and improve all aspects of efficiency on the project. For small and medium size construction companies the investment cost in AI is quite huge. This has led to the low take up by construction companies. There is also resistance in the use of AI as implementation fears arise and construction workers are worried that AI may render them redundant. However, even with these concerns and fears, construction AI will in future work with humans. AI will carry out operations that are dangerous and require great speed and strength, while humans will be tasked with operations that require unique innovation. The benefits of AI will be supercharged once blockchain also becomes commonplace in the construction space, as it will enable the collection of larger quantities of data.
